The gapped teeth slam onto closed lips -
Nan screams and blood steams down chins and shins.
Tiles gleam in water soaked blunder as –
Mum seems calm under pressure,
The youngest member
won’t remember why
Her plumpest lip scarred.
A little girl is brave in danger if
Her mother shows her well.
My mother showed me well.
A savage and scavenger,
Rough and wild wrangler,
My mother’s skin was tougher silk -
Her eyes met kind strangers
Her words were sad remainders
Of the wondrous life she had built.
Mum was always a builder,
She built bathrooms and sprinkler
Systems, kitchens, and foyers;
too bold to be helped.
